:: Grants

What is a grant?

Grants are sums of money that are mostly awarded by governments in order to finance a business/personal activity or facility. Generally, these government grants do not need to be paid back. Federal government agencies, departments and other organizations sponsor grant programs for various reasons.

Before developing a proposal for government grants, it is important to understand the goals of the particular federal government agency, department or private organization, and of the grant program itself. Understanding the goals of government grant programs can be accomplished through discussions with the person listed as an information contact in each government grant description, or by visiting the grantmakers' website. Through these steps, a grant applicant may find that in order for a particular personal or business project to be eligible for funding through a grant program, the original project concept may need modifications in order to meet the criteria of the grant program.

In allocating funds through grant programs, grantmakers base their decisions on the applicant's ability to fit its proposed personal/business activities within the grantmakers' interest areas.
